Squadron Training At The Veloway | Developing Our New Tri Suit

Triathlon Training at the Veloway

The Veloway is a special place for Squadron Racing. We have logged centuries here in preparation for our Ironman races. Hot or cold temps, this is where we've met for many early morning rides.

Training here allows for very dialed sessions. With it being a closed loop to cyclists, there are no traffic variables to think about. All focus goes straight to heart rate, pace, nutrition, and chatting it up with the training crew.

For the very long rides, we bring coolers packed with ice, water, gels, and all other essential fueling. Every few hours when everyone empties their bottles, we make a pit stop at the parking lot and reload on bottles.

Final Shake Out Ride

This time around, we were finishing up a training block for Supertri Austin. This was the last shake out ride before we taking on the olympic distance triathlon in Downtown Austin.

Lucio and Bryan were fresh out of recovery from Ironman Texas, both looking to get back on the race course after a few weeks of low volume. Anzae was kicking off his racing season, this would be a benchmark for him as he prepares for a competitive 70.3 performance at Ironman Musselman 70.3. Kevin was preparing to take on his very first triathlon, starting out with the olympic distance and setting up the season to race a 70.3 by the end of the year.

Prototype Suit Testing

This was also the very first ride in the new prototype race suits. We have been developing our Gen 2 triathlon race suits and this was the first prototype we put together using all new fabrics and stitching patterns. The suits were fast and comfortable on all three legs of the sport, swim, bike, run. Performance wise the suits are a step in the right direction, the only drawback was the sleeves being shorter than intended.

A Squadron Trains Together

We like to train together. It's one of our strengths as a brand, and as athletes. We build a lot of fitness through our individual sessions, but we obtain a lot of our drive and consistency from the community.

In endurance racing, courageous goals are contagious. A friend chasing a sub 10 Ironman becomes inspiration for the others. Another friend aiming for a sub 3 marathon raises the standard for the entire group. One athletes's commitment becomes contagious.

This season we've sought out each other's company during training, not because every workout needs to be social, but because when the sessions are tough, we hold each other accountable to push through it.

When you're surrounded by athletes who prioritize health, race performance, and discipline, showing up becomes easier. The standard becomes higher and excuses are few and far apart.

We've got a lot of miles ahead, but we'll take them on together.

Halfway Through The Year

We have knocked out a lot of our big races for the year.

  • Houston Marathon
  • Austin Marathon
  • Ironman Texas
  • Supertri Austin

Heavy training seasons already in the books for these, but the season is far from over.

We've got some big races coming:

  • Ironman Musselman 70.3
  • Kerrville 70.3 Triathlon
  • Ironman Waco 70.3
  • Dallas Marathon

The goals evolve get bigger year after year. At first we simply raced to finish the course and cross the finish line. As fitness progresses, and we become faster, we get more competitive. We train harder for a stronger performance.

Now it's competing for personal records, podium positions, and top percentages within age groups. For us this is the pursuit of our full potential.

Miles Ahead

Summer's in Texas and the training block ahead is the hardest one of the year. The workouts are long and the temps rise quickly every day. This is when a lot of meaningful work gets done, every mile going forward becomes harder to earn.

There are still goals to chase and personal records waiting to be set. But most importantly, many miles left to ride on the Veloway.
